This was only the second football game played by A&M and was the first time the school played on Thanksgiving Day. Unfortunately, no photographs of Valdez have survived.

Cinderella Story

Carlos Esquivel

Class of 1958

Carlos Esquivel, who was from Edinburg, Texas, played halfback on the Texas A&M football team under the legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1955 to 1957. These teams climbed the national rankings, winning the Southwest Conference Championship in 1956 and holding the number one spot in the nation for several weeks during the 1957 season. The rise to such lofty sports heights is one of the great Aggie sports Cinderella stories of all time.

Robert Cortez

Class of 1968

Robert Cortez was a football letterman from 1965 – 1967, serving as Team Captain in 1967. An extremely physical linebacker, he was instrumental in A&M winning the 1967 Southwest Conference Championship and the 1968 Cotton Bowl with a victory over Alabama. He left A&M with a degree in physical education.
